About Zephyr Medical

Zephyr Medical, in the Brooklyn Heights neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York, provides exceptional care for all pain-related disorders. Board-certified pain management specialist Asher Goldstein, MD, and his highly skilled team use state-of-the-art diagnostics and treatments to reduce and relieve even the most persistent pain.

Patients visiting Zephyr Medical benefit from a personalized “white glove” service that delivers exceptional one-on-one patient care. Conditions the team treats include neck pain, common causes of back pain, including sciatica and lumbar spinal stenosis, and joint pain disorders like arthritis and overuse injuries.

Patients at Zephyr Medical also receive superior treatment for complex conditions like neuropathy (nerve pain and dysfunction), fibromyalgia, autoimmune disease pain, and complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS). The Zephyr Medical team offers specialized failed back surgery treatment for patients in pain after spine surgery.

Cutting-edge treatments available at Zephyr Medical include trigger point injections, ketamine treatment, and steroid injections into the spine and joints, including the sacroiliac joints in the pelvis and the facet joints in the spine.

The Zephyr Medical team also uses anesthetic injections to diagnose and treat specific conditions. Medial nerve blocks treat spinal pain, sympathetic nerve blocks (like stellate ganglion injections) relieve upper body pain, and sphenopalatine nerve blocks relieve head and facial pain.

Zephyr Medical uses facet joint radiofrequency ablation and spinal cord stimulation to help with treatment-resistant back and neck pain. The team also offers other forms of neuromodulation, using electrical signals to stop pain signals from getting through to the brain. These include peripheral nerve stimulation, dorsal root ganglion stimulation, and occipital neurostimulation.

The Zephyr Medical team specializes in minimally invasive procedures, including lumbar disc gel sublimation, minimally invasive lumbar decompression (mild®), and the Intracept® Procedure.

We incorporate a variety of treatment modalities including physical rehabilitation, lifestyle changes, psychology, medications, and advanced minimally invasive procedures.

Additionally, at Zephyr, we offer Complementary and Alternative medicine treatments to enable YOU to return to the very best possible active lifestyle.

Treatments We Provide

Epidural Injections, Cervical Thoracic and Lumbar

Cervical, Thoracic, and Lumbar epidural injections allow your provider to deliver pain-relieving steroids to the epidural space around your spinal nerve roots. These injections reduce inflammation of those nerve roots and, in turn, help you progress with healing without the burden of severe pain.
Trigger Point Injections

Trigger point injections are often helpful for joint pain. Your Zephyr Medical doctor injects an anesthetic, a steroid like cortisone, or both into tightly knotted spots (trigger points) in the muscle tissues.

Facet Joint Injections

Facet joints are small joints in your spine that stabilize and help your movements; these joints can often be the source of pain for those with arthritis or a back injury. A facet joint injection can help your provider diagnose the basis of your pain while offering you pain relief.

Facet Joint Radiofrequency Ablation

Facet Joint Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA) can reduce back pain, improve back function, reduce the need for pain medications, and help avoid or delay surgery. It involves isolating the pain-transmitting nerve with a radiofrequency needle that prevents the nerve from sending pain signals to the brain.

Joint Injections

If you’re suffering from aching knees, wrists, or ankles, joint injections can help. Joint injections relieve pain as they deliver specific steroids directly to the joint in need.

Sacroiliac Joint Injections

If you’re suffering from low back pain or sciatica, sacroiliac joint injections may be right for you. The sacroiliac joints connect the sacrum with the hip on both sides of your body, and inflammation in this area can cause pain.

Medial Branch Blocks

Medial branch blocks help your provider diagnose the source of your pain. Medial branch nerves are small nerves that carry signals from your facet joints, which they’re attached to, to your brain. If you’re experiencing severe pain, a medial branch block can help your provider make progress on your pain relief.

Occipital Neurostimulation

Occipital Neurostimulation is a surgical procedure that can provide you relief from debilitating or chronic headaches. It works by targeting the occipital nerve at the base of your neck. Your surgeon will implant a small device at the bottom of your skull that works by sending soothing electrical impulses to your occipital nerve.

Sphenopalatine Nerve Blocks

Are you suffering from acute facial or neck pain? Is this pain even chronic? A Sphenopalatine ganglion nerve block may be for you. This block is a short, minimally invasive procedure that blocks the signals going through the sphenopalatine ganglion nerves and controls facial pain. It is also a great diagnostic tool.

Sympathetic Nerve Blocks

The Zephyr Medical team uses sympathetic nerve block and stellate ganglion block injections to relieve CRPS pain.

Peripheral Nerve Blocks

A peripheral nerve block is an alternative to general anesthesia by allowing your provider to ‘block’ the nerve-controlling sensation or movement in the area of your body needing surgery. A great benefit to peripheral nerve blocks is that they often help reduce post-operative fatigue, pain, and recovery.

Peripheral Nerve Stimulation

For patients with severe symptoms where nothing else is helping, peripheral nerve stimulation (PNS) might be effective. PNS uses electrical pulses to scramble the pain signals your nerves send to your brain.

Dorsal Root Ganglion Stimulation

Zephyr Medical offers advanced treatments like dorsal root ganglion injections and stimulation to reduce the pain CRPS causes.

Spinal Cord Stimulation

Zephyr Medical uses facet joint radiofrequency ablation and spinal cord stimulation to help with treatment-resistant back and neck pain.

Lumbar Disc Gel Sublimination

The Zephyr Medical team specializes in minimally invasive procedures, including lumbar disc gel sublimation -injections into the disc that shrink it, relieving nerve pressure.

MILD, Minimally Invasive Lumbar Decompression

MILD is an acronym for minimally invasive lumbar decompression. This cutting-edge method helps patients suffering from Lumbar Spinal Stenosis (LSS). This condition causes the spinal canal to narrow and creates pain in the lower back. With this procedure, your doctor can provide pain relief quickly, so you can get back to the activities you love.

Spine Spacers

If you have spinal stenosis, you need fast relief. The interspinous spacer, or spine spacer, is a small implant that can help to relieve your spinal stenosis-related pain. The spacer keeps your spinous processes open so that your spinal nerves will not be pinched or cause severe pain when you stand upright.

Intracept Procedure

Zephyr Medical also offers the advanced Intracept procedure for vertebrogenic pain. This innovative, nonsurgical treatment involves heating the nerve root in the area causing pain. The heat destroys the nerve, stopping it from transmitting pain signals to your brain.
